The Ala Kahakai trail can be accessed for hiking at four National Parks: Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site, Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Additionally, the section of the Ala Kahakai Trail under Hawaiʻi State Nā Ala Hele jurisdiction is open for public use. This trail is located on the Kohala Coast between Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site and Anaeho'omalu Bay.
