February 26 and 28, 2025Join Appomattox Court House National Historical Park for two special Black History Month programs!A new guided tour, “Following in Their Footsteps,” will highlight some of the many stories of Black history within the town of Appomattox Court House before, during and after April 9, 1865. It will take place on Wednesday, February 26 at 1 p.m. A special evening program, “Let Us Build A House,” will take place on Friday, February 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Galilee Baptist Church (4248 Old Courthouse Rd, Appomattox, VA). Beginning in 1865, freed Black residents of Appomattox County formed the first public school in Appomattox, followed by Galilee Baptist Church, the first African American church in the area. Join park employees and community members as we celebrate Black history in Appomattox. Refreshments and conversation will be provided by Galilee Baptist Church following the presentation. April 7-13, 2025- 160th Commemoration of Surrender and Freedom DayAppomattox Court House National Historical Park will commemorate the 160th anniversary of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant and Freedom Day (April 9) with special anniversary programs and activities from April 7-13, 2025. Learn More.
