What is Historic Preservation?

Historic preservation is all about taking care of the places, buildings, and stories that matter. It means protecting historic landmarks, restoring old structures, and keeping cultural sites alive so future generations can experience and learn from them. Whether it’s hands-on work with tools, research, or community outreach, it’s a powerful way to stay connected to our past and shape the future. If you're into history, architecture, storytelling, or just making a lasting impact, there’s a place for you in this field.

About Historic Preservation Corps

The SCA Massachusetts Historic Preservation Corps is a young-adult service-learning program based in Massachusetts that offers participants training and experience in several historic preservation and maintenance trades including carpentry, window restoration, historic trail-side structure restoration, masonry, landscaping, painting, and more. National Parks of Boston, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and the SCA have partnered together to create an unforgettable 10-month experience for young adults, age 18-30 (35 for veterans), in the Greater Boston area.

The Student Conservation Association and the National Park Service (NPS) have a strong partnership dedicated to conserving and protecting our national parks. Together, they provide meaningful service and learning opportunities for young people passionate about stewardship and environmental conservation. This collaboration helps preserve natural and cultural resources while fostering the next generation of park leaders.

About AmeriCorps and Massachusetts Service Alliance

Program participants are members of the AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps is a federal program that engages volunteers in community service projects across the United States, focusing on areas like education, disaster response, public health, and environmental conservation. The Massachusetts Service Alliance mission is to foster a culture of service across the Commonwealth by investing in, supporting, and mobilizing volunteers and service initiatives—such as AmeriCorps and Commonwealth Corps—through funding, training, technical assistance, and advocacy.

I’ve really valued learning how historic sites are preserved through matching materials, styles, and craftsmanship, and I’ve loved meeting the people who work there and hearing what drew them to this field.

Program Impacts

Some recent projects of the HPC include preserving windows of the USS Constitution Museum, revitalizing the historic railroads of the Charlestown Navy Yard, and restoring fence around the Bunker Hill Monument grounds. A few of the skills crew members learn include woodworking and repairing wooden structures, masonry restoration, window preservation, and paint restoration.

I’ve loved picking up new skills alongside a group where I really felt like I belonged. I also appreciated being able to build connections that I hope will help me turn what I’ve learned from this program into a career.
