Descendant Community

Names of enslaved persons are project onto the wall of antebellum plantation house at night.
In acknowledgement of an 1824 sale of 55 enslaved individuals, Belle Grove Plantation projected their names onto the Manor House. The handwritten names are images from primary sources.

Belle Grove, Inc.

The National Park Service, Belle Grove Plantation, and The College of William & Mary are looking for descendants of the Shenandoah Valley's enslaved. Enslaved labor built much of the Valley's economy before the Civil War. We invite their descendants to help us share an inclusive history of the region.

Who Are Descendants?

Descendants are anyone who shares an identity with persons formerly enslaved in the Shenandoah Valley. They are also anyone interested in saving and telling the history of enslavement.

How Can Descendants Help Us?

Descendants can help us decide which stories to research and tell. They can also help build the descendant community group.
