The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial welcomes all individuals with a disability and their service animals! Access

  • This is an outdoor memorial. Located directly next to the U.S. Department of Education building, the memorial can be accessed directly from the sidewalk. Bollards are embedded in some sidewalks around the memorial, leaving about 39 inches of room to navigate around. Stairs and ramps are located in between the U.S. Department of Education building and the memorial.
  • Street parking is available next to the memorial.
  • The surface of the memorial is stone granite, making it slippery when wet or icy.
  • In the middle of the memorial are two, skinny pathways about a foot and a half wide. Visitors do not have to use these pathways to access all parts of the memorial. Most pathways are wide enough.
  • Benches, some have backs and arm rests, are located throughout the memorial

Exhibits

There are multiple statues and engravings throughout the memorial that visitors may touch. Statues include The Young Man, Honoring the General, and Honoring the President. A 447 ft long and 60 ft tall stainless-steel tapestry is positioned as a backdrop for the memorial. Inscriptions include Order of the Day, Homecoming Speech, Guildhall Address, First Inaugural Address, Second Inaugural Address, and Farewell Address. Double glass doors allow visitors to enter the visitor center/bookstore. A wheelchair-accessible button is positioned to the right of the entrance on a separate column.

Visitor Center

  • The visitor center is on the left side of the memorial when facing it from Independence Ave SW.
  • To enter the bookstore, visitors can push the wheelchair-accessible button located to the right of the entrance doors. The push button stands at 34 inches high. The second set of double doors can also be opened with the wheelchair-accessible button.
  • Inside the bookstore, various items are for sale.
  • When facing the visitor center, the information window is located on the right side of the building. It is 32 inches from the ground to the underside of the information window.
 
A tall, metal door is positioned to the right of a sign that reads, "women". To the right of the sign is a wheelchair-accessible door button. The door also had a handle for visitors to push open.

Restrooms

  • The restrooms are located at the rear of the visitor center. They are separated by gender (braille is available on restroom signs) and each have a wheelchair-accessible button located to the right to open the doors. The second door can also be opened with a wheelchair-accessible button. The entrance doors are metal and may take more than 5 pounds of strength to open. The entrances have small lips and are about 3 feet (35 inches) in width. Each restroom has a baby changing station and one wheelchair accessible stall.
  • A family restroom is located next to the information window. It has two toilets, a sink, and a baby changing station.

Water Fountain

The water fountain is located next to the information window on the right side of the visitor center.

Equipment

  • One wheelchair is available on site to borrow. The brand is Drive TM, and it is in the visitor center.
  • There is a 10-page braille guide of the memorial located in the visitor center. Visitors cannot take the guide with them.
  • Explore the audio guide to discover the memorial’s design and the stories it tells.

Noise

The memorial is typically quiet, but since located in the middle of a large city, city noise (traffic, sirens, aircraft overhead, street conversations, etc.) can be loud.

Light

Since the memorial is white granite, the sun reflecting on the surface can create a harsh light. Be sure to protect your skin and eyes.
