The Facts

Ellis Island is a 27.5 acre island located in the Upper Bay of New York Harbor. The closest body of land is Liberty Island to the south. New Jersey is to the west and Manhattan Island, New York City is to the east. The public is brought to Ellis Island by concessionaire boats leaving The Battery, Manhattan in New York City, and Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

Staffing

Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island employs a diverse staff among several divisions, including the Office of the Superintendent and Divisions of: Administration; Facility Management and Maintenance Operations; Safety and Emergency Medical Services; Interpretation, Education and Visitor Services; Museum Services; Concession Management; and Professional Services and Project Management.

Effects of Visitor Spending

In 2023, the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island had 3.7 million park visitors who spent an estimated $250 million in local gateway communities. These expenditures supported a total of 2,700 jobs, $149 million in labor income, $242 million in value added, and $367 million in economic output in the local economies.
