Special Use Permits

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument (FLFO) provides opportunities for the visiting public to enjoy and learn about the natural and cultural resources found in this area. As a unit of the National Park Service (NPS), certain activities conducted by private persons or groups that require some degree of management by the NPS are managed through the Special Use Permit (SUP) program.

Such activities are allowed when they are consistent with the mission of the monument and if they will not harm the resource or interfere with the visitor experience. Examples might include weddings, family reunions, sporting events, movie segment filming, and the scattering of ashes.

We are mandated to recover costs to the US government for the management of this permit program. Application fees are required for all permits except those issued for First Amendment activities. Costs for any necessary activity monitoring or resource restoration would also be the responsibility of the permittee.

Application for SUPs can be made via email but any applicable fees or costs can only be made by check at this time and must be mailed or shipped to the monument.

General Special Use Permits

The non-refundable application fee for a SUP is $100.00. Depending on the activity, liability insurance and/or a security deposit may be required.

Commercial Filming/Still Photography Permits

SUPs are also issued for activities that involve commercial filming/still photography. If the activity involves talent (in front of the camera) or crew (behind the camera), or if it involves sets, props, and equipment, then it likely needs this kind of permit. The non-refundable application fee for a Commercial Film/Photo SUP is $100.00. The following are also required: liability insurance and a daily location fee. A security deposit may also be required.

First Amendment Permits – Demonstrations and Distribution of Materials

First amendment activities are only authorized in specifically designated sites within NPS units.

The application fee for this type of SUP is waived. However, the permittee can be held responsible for the cost of resource restoration should damage occur.
