About the Richard. J. Guadagno Education and Outreach Fellowship at Flight 93 National Memorial

Flight 93 National Memorial is looking for a creative, self-motivated and independent young professional to join the interpretive education team of park rangers, memorial partners and volunteers. This is an opportunity to be part of a unique and challenging historic interpretation experience, focusing on the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 and more specifically, the Flight 93 story. The work experience will provide opportunities to contribute as a team member within the interpretation division, as well as collaboration with education and resource management divisions on specific projects.

Fellowship Requirements

The Richard J. Guadagno Fellow will serve from approximately May through December, the start date is flexible. Ideal candidates should have strong oral and written communication skills, experience with public speaking and a desire to learn the art of interpretation. Knowledge of social media platforms, graphic media design and video/photography skills are preferable. The intensity and immediacy of the subject matter and high volume of visitors requires strong listening skills, the ability to multitask, and to professionally and compassionately communicate difficult subject matter with diverse audiences and manage large groups. The position will require long periods of time outdoors and standing/walking for extended periods of time.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide visitor education and orientation at the Memorial Plaza, Learning Center, Visitor Center, Tower of Voices and along trails through formal and informal interactions
  • Research, prepare and present educational and interpretive programs for visitors on a variety of topics
  • Contribute as a vital team member for annual special events, such as the September 11 Memorial Observance, reforestation events in the spring, and special interpretive programming throughout the summer season
  • Developing educational short videos, infographics and other communication-based projects for the memorial website and social media platforms about the memorial
  • Other opportunities may include formatting and publishing new educational and/or interpretive materials to support programming to serve all ages
  • Depending on candidate’s strengths and experiences there may be the opportunity to work with education staff on supplemental materials for teachers.
  • The nature of this work also requires clerical work such as typing, data collection for statistical purposes, recording and reporting visitor use statistics, traffic counts, and occasional filing to ensure accurate records for the site are kept.
