Fortification in the Wilderness

22 year-old George Washington was not planning to build a fort on the Great Meadows. This truly was a fort OF necessity. His intent was for the area Fort Necessity occupies to be a trade depot. A rest stop for travelers heading to the "real fort" at Red Stone creek. (today's Brownsville, PA)

Historic Archeology

In 1953, the National Park Service (NPS) unexpectedly found that they had spent twenty years misinterpreting the Fort Necessity story. NPS archeologists found the remains of the original 1754 fort. Five pieces from that find are on display in our Visitor Center.
