Fort Smith National Historic Site may be offering summer positions for youth between the ages of 15 and 18!

Join the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) and become an important member of a group of dedicated individuals who work and play in national parks, forests, and refuges. As a member of the Youth Conservation Corps, you will personally have a role in protecting the nation's precious resources during this 8-10 week summer program.

What Would You Be Doing?

Protecting important cultural and natural resources! You will learn new skills while conducting projects to help restore and protect the natural, cultural, and historic resources of Fort Smith National Historic Site. Examples may include:
  • Removing exotic or invasive plants.
  • Painting fences and historic buildings.
  • Teaching childrens' environmental education programs.
  • Preserving the natural habitat along the Arkansas River.
  • Working with a curator to preserve the park's collection.
  • Spending time with a historian to digitize documents.
  • Working with the public at an information desk.
  • Conducting an inventory of the park's living history collection.

Learn Something New Every Day

The Youth Conservation Corps isn't just about work, it's about building a future for yourself and the nation. While working on projects you will learn:
  • How your project benefits the park or the overall environment.
  • The project's positive environmental or cultural impacts.
  • The cultural and historical significance of the park.
