Rome Historical Society – Friends of Fort Stanwix

The official Friends Group of Fort Stanwix National Monument. The mission of the Rome Historical Society is, “To actively research, collect, preserve, and present the historical importance of Rome, N.Y. and to serve as an educational and community resource.” National Park Friends Groups are established to help support a wide variety of park activities through fundraising, membership programs, and increasing awareness. Friends of Fort Stanwix works with the National Park Service to provide dynamic experiences that connect park visitors to recreational and educational opportunities in and around Fort Stanwix.

The Oneida Indian Nation

The Oneida Indian Nation is an indigenous nation of American Indian people whose sacred and sovereign homelands are located in Central New York. The Nation was a key ally of the United States during the Revolutionary War, and it has been a cultural and economic anchor for the region. Through the diversified business enterprises it has successfully built in recent decades, the Oneida Indian Nation has become one of the largest employers in New York. It has also forged agreements with neighboring governments that have fortified the Nation’s sovereignty in perpetuity.

Today, the Nation is focused on reinvesting its revenues in initiatives to help guarantee a prosperous and sustainable future for its current Members and for future generations. The Nation’s government makes sure its people can achieve their highest potential in education, have access to quality health care, and can secure their economic future. It is also dedicated to providing legal, administrative and educational services to help protect its people’s sovereignty, homelands, culture and job opportunities

City of Rome, NY

Historic Rome, NY, incorporated in 1870, is conveniently located in the geographical center of New York State at the foothills of the Adirondacks, and positioned at an important early land bridge between main waterways. Due to its strategic location, it was considered one of the most important transportation points for people and goods moving west.

The ceremonial ground breaking for the Erie Canal happened here on July 4, 1817. The Erie Canal connected the waters of the Atlantic Ocean with the Waters of the Great Lakes, thus opening the west and making New York the Empire State.

Rome has been home to many noteworthy and influential residents. Benjamin Wright lived in Rome at the inception of the canal era. He self-taught himself engineering and became the Chief Engineer of the Erie Canal. John B. Jervis worked under Wright on the Erie, became a Resident Engineer on the Erie and worked on other canals. Jervis was credited with importing the first locomotive to America and the inventor and inventing an engine design which revolutionized railroads. His home became Jervis Public Library.

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

The Mission of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors and to be responsible stewards of our valuable natural, historic and cultural resources. The Oriskany Battlefield and Steuben Memorial State Historic Sites are cooperatively managed by Fort Stanwix National Monument and the NYOPRHP.
