Why does the park use cashless operations?
Reducing cash collected in fee operations allows a park unit to be a better steward of our visitors’ dollars. It allows Fort Sumter & Fort Moultrie NHP to:
Reduce the amount of time park staff spend managing cash (i.e. reduce our administrative burden)
Improve accountability and reduce the chance of errors
Maximize funding available for visitor services and critical projects
Reduce transaction times
Stay safe, secure, and effective
Have our rangers to spend more time with visitors.
What park sites and operations are cashless?
Fort Moultrie is our only park site that collects NPS entrance fees. Visitors are required to pay their entrance fee at the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center, which is a cashless operation.
Ferry trips to Fort Sumter are through a third-party concessioner, Fort Sumter Tours. As of February 2024, Fort Sumter Tours does allow cash and card sales. You can purchase ferry tickets online.
Can I use contactless payments (e.g., Apple Pay or my pre-paid Wallet phone app)?
Yes, you can use Apple Pay and other contactless payments systems at the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center.
Can I use a personal check or cashier’s check?
No. Only credit, debit, and other forms of electronic payment are accepted at the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center.
Can I purchase a pass before I get to the park?
Yes. Visitors can go to recreation.gov to purchase a Fort Moultrie 7-Day Pass or Fort Moultrie Annual Pass.
Can I show a digital copy of my pre-paid entrance pass at park entrance stations?
