A National Salute: Fort Moultrie at the Close of the Civil War
April 12-13, 2025
Saturday, April 12 is a fee-free day. Regular site fees resume on Sunday, April 13. This year marks the 160th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War. Living historians in period clothing will portray soldiers and civilians to help provide visitors the opportunity to learn about the end of the war at the place it began.

Join a ranger and living historians to help raise the U.S. flag. Learn about the importance of the flag's return to Charleston's forts in 1865.
Ranger Talks 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., behind Fort Moultrie
Join a ranger and learn more about the history of Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie.
Historic Weapons Demonstration 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m, behind Fort Moultrie
Join living historians for a historic weapons demonstration with the firing of muskets and rifles.
Flag Lowering Program 4:00 p.m., inside Fort Moultrie
Join a ranger and living historians to help lower the U.S. flag. Learn about the importance of the flag's return to Charleston's forts in 1865.
History Row 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., along the left-hand side of Fort Moultrie
Walk up ranger and historical stations provide hands-on activities for visitors of all ages! Fort Construction and Timeline: Learn more about the construction of Fort Sumter and the timeline of events from 1861-1865! Drill and Games: Join a ranger and practice rifle drills just like a Civil War soldier. Learn about and play some of the games that children of the era would have enjoyed. Civil War Soldier uniform and equipment: Try on a Civil War soldier jacket, learn about some of the equipment a soldier might have used during the war.

Join one of the park's volunteers, Dr. Russell Horres, for a interpretative talk about the flag raising ceremony that took place on April 14, 1865.
National Park Week: April 2025
National Park Week is an annual presidentially proclaimed celebration to encourage people to discover places, programs, experiences, and stories of the NPS. The first National Park Week occurred in 1991 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NPS. The next National Park Week was held in 1994 and it has been an annual event ever since.

Historic Weapons Demonstrations
Rifle, musket, and cannon firing demonstrations are provided at three different times during the day.
Rifle and musket firing demonstrations occur at 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m and 3:30 p.m.
Cannon firing demonstrations occur at 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m and 4:00 p.m.
Presentations by Living Historians
Interpretive programs will be presented at two different times during the day.
Patriot programs occur at 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
British programs occur at 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Park rangers will present talks on a variety of topics at the Wando-Mt. Pleasant and Poe (Sullivan's Island) Libraries throughout the year.

National Public Lands Day: September 2025
National Public Lands Day is organized annually and led by the National Environmental Education Foundation, in partnership with the National Park Service and other federal agencies. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves to help restore and preserve public lands of all types and sizes—from iconic national parks and rivers to local urban green spaces and everything in between. National Public Lands Day is special because it provides all lovers of the environment—old and new—an opportunity to show our appreciation for these unique places.
