4th of July at Fort Washington

Join us at Fort Washington to celebrate the Fourth of July!

The historic fort will remain open until the end of the DC fireworks show. There will also be ranger-guided tours of the fort and an artillery demonstration.

8:00 Flag Program

Learn about one of the many flags that flew over Fort Washington and ask yourself, "What does the Flag mean to you?" Discover a new way to see the flag through the eyes of the defenders of Fort Warburton and Fort Washington.

8:30 Artillery Demonstration

Step back in time and watch Union soldiers fire a cannon!
Learn about the process of loading and firing a Civil War era cannon with Fort Washington staff and volunteers. A Ranger will explain each step as its happening. Rangers and volunteers will be available after the demonstration to answer questions.

This demonstration will involve loud noises, similar to that of a firework. Rangers will give a warning to cover your ears, but this program may not be right for people or dogs that are frightened by loud noises.

9:09 Fireworks on the National Mall

Watch local fireworks shows from the parapets of Fort Washington. There will be no firework show within the park, but you will be able to see many fireworks set off along the Viriginia shore and up river in Washington, DC. Because the fireworks shows are far away, they are much quieter. This makes Fort Washington a great option for people with sensitivity to noise.
