Field trips and site visits to the monument are offered year round, but come prepared for the weather. Summers can be hot and muggy. Winters can be cold and windy.

Please submit your request 2 weeks before desired program date. Requests made less than 2 weeks of desired date will be considered but may not be able to be accommodated due to limited staffing. National Park Service staff recommend booking a programs at least 4 weeks before the desired program date in the month of May due to commemorative events. Any group (school, religious, family reunion, etc.) with 15 people or more visiting the national monument and wanting a ranger talk should book a program.

Park Rangers provide interactive and informative experiences for students and groups using their historical knowledge. They encourage active participation, critical thinking, and analyzing connections between historical events.

Field trips to the national monument can include several sites around Anniston, Alabama.

  1. Historic Anniston Greyhound Bus Depot: This is the bus depot the Freedom Riders were attempting to integrate on May 14, 1961. This location is the best location for talking to larger groups and story telling. Staff recommends visiting a restroom before visiting this site; restroom facilities are limited. Plan a 30 minutes to 1 hour to visit this site.
  2. Greyhound Bus Burning Site: This is where the Greyhound Bus was attacked the second time, and where it was burned May 14, 1961. This site can be a powerful stop but is very noisy due to the nearby highway. This location is not ideal for long conversations with large groups. There are no restroom facilities at this site. Plan 30 minutes to drive to this site from the Bus Depot and visit.
  3. "The Other Bus" Mural: This site is a 5 minute (about 3 block) walk from the Historic Anniston Greyhound Bus Depot. This is the site where the second half of the Freedom Riders were attacked on a Trailways bus when it came into Anniston one hour after the Greyhound Bus was attacked. There are no restroom facilities at this site. Plan 30 minutes to walk, visit, and return to the Greyhound Bus Depot or 15 minutes if driving.
