While Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park was set aside to preserve and save the memory of those that fought and died on this hallowed ground, there are many natural features that have been preserved in the park.
Visitors to the Fredericksburg area experience a wide diversity of ecosystems and biological communities. With elevation in the park ranging from near sea level to over 350 feet, a wide diversity of animals and plants inhabit the rolling countryside. Ponds, streams, wetlands, forests, and meadows are all found within the 7,600 acres of the park, and each feature makes its unique contribution to the natural tapestry.
