Hiking

There are over 20 miles of trails in the Brandywine Valley unit of First State National Historical Park for visitors to enjoy. Please be aware that many of these trails are curently unmarked, though most are well established and easy to follow. As with hiking anywhere, always make sure you do the following before hitting the trails:

  • Check weather and temperature, and dress appropriately.
  • Wear proper footwear.
  • Bring an adequate amount of water. There are no potable water sources within the Brandywine Valley. Always bring more than you think you will need!
  • Tell someone where you will be, and when you are expected to return.

In the event of an emergency, call 911 immediately.

Fishing

Fishing is permitted along the Brandywine Creek and its tributaries. All federal, state, and local laws & regulations must be followed. More information on fishing licenses, rules, & regulations can be found on our fishing page here.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is permitted in the Brandywine Valley unit of the park for individuals and small groups. Large groups, and any organized groups, may need to obtain a special use permit before their event. Please email us regarding special use permits.
