Salary: $124,189 to - $161,448 per year
Location(s): This one position is located in Gateway National Recreation Area, in the Resource and Visitor Protection Division, and can be filled at either location - Highlands, New Jersey or Staten Island, New York.

Job Description:

Serve as the Chief Ranger for Gateway National Recreation Area.

  • Manage a visitor protection program that includes both public safety and resource protection, Law Enforcement (LE), Lifeguard Services, and Emergency Services (EMS).
  • Provide technical assistance and oversight to field-level personnel as they develop written reports for complex incidents involving trauma and medical emergencies, visitor fatalities, beach/ocean rescues, custodial arrests, violation notices and written warnings, law enforcement reports, evidence collections, and suspect interviews in support of complex criminal investigations.
  • Exercise the full range of supervisory duties; work with subordinate staff to execute established work plans; and establish work schedules and priorities.
  • Prepares long range budget planning documents, staffing level requirements, and position management plans for Operational National Park Service (ONPS) budgets and other alternate fund sources.
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy, and empathy to provide information and assistance, as well as resolve conflicts, while interacting with management, staff, park partners, and the public through telephone and personal interaction.

As a Supervisory Park Ranger you will lead daily operations and direct the completion of collateral duties related to training and leadership. You will supervise permanent and seasonal law enforcement rangers as well as non-commissioned staff and park volunteers. You will conduct and supervise the detection of criminal activity, investigation of criminal violations, and custodial arrests. You may prepare and execute warrants, interview witnesses, and detain suspects. You will ensure the completion of comprehensive written reports. You will conduct and/or supervise gathering of law enforcement, security, and intelligence information relating to the park, its facilities, events, mission, or visitors.

You will set work goals and ensure all employees receive required training in a timely manner; identify operational requirements and make recommendations to your supervisor regarding programming, budgeting, training, administration, and evaluation of operations; and schedule patrols to maximize visitor contact with special consideration to problem areas. You will supervise and lead complex law enforcement, all hazard, emergency medical, and search and rescue operations as well as provide emergency medical services to park visitors and residents. In addition, you will participate in all aspects of employee supervision including performance planning and appraisals, employee recognition, and employee counseling.
