Inkberry

Inkberry (Ilex glabra)

Inkberry is native to New Jersey and thrives within all regions of the state. Inkberry is identified as an evergreen holly with spineless leaves. It’s often accompanied by small green or white flower buds, as well as black berry-like fruits, both of which are present through spring to winter months. The flowers serve as a source of nectar for bees, as they produce sweet gallberry honey. The fruit of the plant attracts a variety of birds. The plant can grow to between 6 ft. and 8 ft. in height and is able spread up to 10 feet. However, its growth rate is recognized as slow in comparison to other native plants.
