Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia)

The Virginia creeper features several evolving appearances. For example, it is a vibrant green vine during most of the year but turns a deeper crimson during fall. It hosts green and white flowers throughout the summer followed by berries valued by wildlife. The Virginia creeper is an important host plant to multiple caterpillar species and is considered a “vigorous tendril climber,” however, it isn’t parasitic and doesn’t smother its hosts. It is native to New Jersey and grows in barrier island, coastal, and pineland environments.
