Fence Maintenance

A group of people begin to build a wooden fence in the middle of a mowed green grass field. The wooden fence has been laid one course in a zig-zag pattern. Two people are laying one piece of fence near the camera while a large group readies more.

Fence Maintenance

The Gettysburg battlefield has over 70 miles of fence lines of various styles including Virginia Worm, Post and Rail, Stone Walls, and many others. Our volunteers assist park staff maintaining these walls. The majority of the work consists of cleaning vegetation off and around the fences but when needed, park volunteers help to rebuild sections of damaged fences and walls. This work is outdoors and subject to the weather, so volunteers are encouraged to dress appropriately and wear sunscreen and bug spray. Volunteers need to be able to walk some distances, stand for extended periods of time, and bend and lift.
