Parking Lots

There are numerous dedicated parking lots of various sizes throughout Gettysburg National Military Park. Some also have accessible parking and parking for buses and RVs and oversized vehicles as well. The operating hours of the parking lots is the same as the battlefield, 30-minutes before sunrise to 30-minutes after sunset daily. All other parking throughout the battlefield should be parallel parking on the right side of the road only with all wheels on the road at all times. Please do not park on the shoulder or grass at any time.

There are no fees for parking at any of the locations.

A. Museum and Visitor Center: Parking Lot Number One

Live Status

This is the primary short-term visitor parking lot for the Museum and Visitor Center. The lot is divided into five parking bays, with the first parking bay dedicated to accessible parking only. Additionally, there is a 15-minute parking zone for Licensed Battlefield Guides to meet their tour groups. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Live Status

This automobile parking lot is the overflow parking lot for the Museum and Visitor Center lot number one. It can be accessed from Lot number one, along Visitor Center Drive and from Taneytown Road. A sidewalk connects lot number three to the Museum and Visitor Center. Another trail takes visitors to the sidewalk along Taneytown Road. Connecting to Hunt Avenue to the north and Pleasonton Avenue to the south where visitors can continue their battlefields tour. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Live Status

Short-term parking lot for Auto Tour Stop number two, the Eternal Light Peace Memorial, along Mummasburg Road provides parking for automobiles, five recreational vehicles and tour buses. Four additional points of interest at the Tour Stop are a monument to Ramseur's Brigade, along with monuments to Hurt's Battery, Fry's Battery and Page's Battery. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Live Status

Across Mummasburg Road, on Doubleday Avenue, is the short-term automobile parking lot for visitors to the Oak Ridge Observation Tower. Among the monuments a short distance from the observation tower, along Doubleday Avenue, include the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 12th Massachusetts Infantry. 16th Maine Infantry and 83rd New York Infantry. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Live Status

Short-term parking lot for Auto Tour Stop number five, just off West Confederate Avenue, is located alongside the Virginia Memorial. A trail from this point provides visitors an opportunity to hike the route of Pickett's Charge. The path is approximately one mile from the Virginia Memorial to the Angle and the Lewis Armistead Monument, located on the other side of the Emmittsburg Road. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Live Status

Short-term automobile parking lot for visitors to the Park Amphitheater. Along with passage to the amphitheater, the location also boasts a monument to General James Longstreet. A short walk from the parking lot are the monuments to the 1st U.S. Sharpshooters (Berdan's), 3rd Maine Volunteer Infantry and Company F, 1st U.S. Vermont Sharpshooters. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Live Status

On West Confederate Avenue, just past the intersection with Millerstown Road, is the short-term visitor parking lot for the Warfield Observation Tower. The lot provides spaces for automobiles, recreational vehicles, and tour buses. From the observation tower, visitors can view a great many consequential landmarks across the battlefield. From the Wheatfield to Cemetery Ridge, from the Peach Orchard to Abraham Brian's Farm. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Live Status

This lightly wooded area provides multiple round tables and benches to visitors looking for a shaded location to have a meal or just a moment of rest from their tour of the battlefield. Restrooms are within walking distance at the South End Ranger Station. Though there are no on-site cooking facilities, visitors may use camp stoves, but charcoal fires are not permitted. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Live Status

Along South Confederate Avenue is the short-term automobile parking lot for Big Round Top. The summit hiking trail is roughly a half mile long and tops out at 784 feet in elevation. Trailheads to The Devil's Kitchen, The Slyder Farm, and Devil's Den are a short distance from the parking lot. Overnight parking is not permitted.

The parking lot for the Auto Tour Stop Number eight, the summit of Little Round Top, provides short-term parking for automobiles, recreational vehicles and tour buses. Additional automobile parking and access to the monuments on Little Round Top are available on South Confederate Avenue, Warren Avenue, Wright Avenue, and Wheatfield Road. At the intersection of Wheatfield Road and Sedgewick Avenue is a gravel lot that provided short-term automobile parking. Directly across from this gravel lot is a wooded trail that invites visitors to the summit of Little Round Top past the 5th Corps Artillery Brigade Monument. Visitors can further explore monuments to the 5th Corps Headquarters, 121st New York Infantry, 98th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Ohio Artillery Battery L and other points of interest. Overnight parking is not permitted.

On Warren Avenue, between Crawford Avenue and Sykes Avenue is a short-term parking lot with automobile parking on the left side and a single tour bus or recreational vehicle parking spot on the right side. Monuments to the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves, 83rd Pennsylvania and a monument to Strong Vincent are positioned along a wooded trail on the southern slope of Little Round Top. Overnight parking is not permitted.

The Devil's Den parking lot provides short-term parking for automobiles. Monuments to the 4th Maine Volunteer Infantry and 99th Pennsylvania Infantry and the Devil's Den Witness Tree are on the summit. The Plum Run Valley, better known as the Slaughter Pen is mere steps away. Across the wooden footbridge is the walking trail of the old Gettysburg Electric Trolly and the trailhead to The Devil’s Kitchen. Overnight parking is not permitted.

Highlights of this area include monuments to General George Sears Greene, Knapp's Battery, the 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the area around a giant boulder made famous by sketch artist Edwin Forbes. Short-term visitor parking lot for the Gettysburg National Military Park, on the corner of Hunt Avenue and Taneytown Road. As visitors cross Taneytown Road, they encounter the Leister Farm - General Meade's Headquarters and the Oneida Independence Cavalry Monument while making their way to the monuments along Hancock Avenue. Overnight parking is not permitted.

 

Getting Around Gettysburg

Public transportation is available in Gettysburg through Freedom Transit, operated by the Adams County Transit Authority. Freedom Transit has three lines- Red, Blue and Gray- that run to downtown Gettysburg from the Museum and Visitor Center, to stops west of Gettysburg as well as stops east of town at convenient locations for visitors staying in area hotels and motels. The speed limit in Gettysburg is 25 miles per hour on most borough streets, which are clearly marked with directional signs and turning lanes at prominent intersections. Metered public parking is available on most borough streets. For downtown convenience, public parking lots are available on East High Street and in the downtown parking deck on Race Horse Alley, accessible from North Stratton Street. The parking deck should be used for your visit to the Wills House, located on the square in Gettysburg.

Drivers should be mindful of slow moving horse-drawn carriages during spring, summer and fall months as well as heavy pedestrian traffic at intersections.

By Automobile
Gettysburg National Military Park is located in Adams County, Pennsylvania. The museum and visitor center is located at 1195 Baltimore Pike (Route 97) with a back entrance from the Taneytown Road (State Rt. 134). From North or South, follow US 15 to Gettysburg and watch for signs to direct you to the National Park Service Museum and Visitor Center. The signs are near the exit at Rt. 97. Go north on Route 97 and look for the visitor center entrance, which will be on your left at the stoplight. From East or West, drive into Gettysburg on US Rt. 30, turn South on Baltimore Street (Rt. 97), and follow signs to the entrance of the visitor center, which will be on your right at the stoplight.

By Air
Harrisburg International Airport at Middletown, Pennsylvania, approximately 35 miles north of Gettysburg is the closest air terminal. The second closest is Baltimore-Washington International near Baltimore, Maryland. Gettysburg has a small airfield on Route 30 west of Gettysburg that will accommodate private aircraft.

By Bus
