Camping in the Lake Roberts and Mimbres area offers a peaceful retreat in the Gila National Forest with scenic views, wildlife, and access to outdoor recreation. The lake is popular for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching, with trails leading into the surrounding forest. These campgrounds are managed by the US Forest Service. Please contact the Gila National Forest for more information about the different sites. (The Gila National Forest offices are closed on weekends and holidays).
Mesa CampgroundOpen Seasonally: Check with Forest Service (above number)Mesa campground provides a nice view of Lake Roberts. If you are looking for a lakeside retreat within easy driving distance of historic Silver City, then come and enjoy the beauty of the Gila National Forest at this campground. Mesa Campground is nestled in the juniper and pinon trees on the mesa above Lake Roberts. The campground has sites along the bluff with great views of the lake below. Migrating birds in the campground and waterfowl on the lake make this a great place to go birding.
Upper End CampgroundPopular campground in the Lake Roberts Recreation Area. Easy access to a number of trails in the area (Purgatory Chasm, Lake Roberts Trail, Spirit Canyon).
Sapillo CampgroundSapillo is an undeveloped campground under ponderosa pine and is a favorite of group campers. Provides easy access to hike a segment of the Continental Divide Trail. There is no firewood available. Please bring your own if you plan on building a fire. Please "Pack It In, Pack It Out" and do not dispose of trash in the campfire rings.
Rocky Canyon CampgroundLocated on Forest Road 150, approximately 19 miles from the Wilderness Ranger District in Mimbres. FR150 can be very rough, so we advise high clearance 4 x 4 vehicles.There is a potential for flooding during the monsoon season or periods of heavy rain at this campsite due to the 2022 Black Fire.
