Going-to-the-Sun Road, the first National Park Service transcontinental divide road, had a profound impact on road design policy throughout the National Park system even before it was complete. As the primary circulation route in the park, Going-to-the-Sun Road allows for interpark travel between Yellowstone and the Pacific Northwest, and is an excellent example of a sensitive response to topography and scenic features. The 49-mile road and its associated features are a defined historic district which collectively retain extraordinary integrity and offer nearly the same experience for visitors today as they did during the early years. In 1983 Going-To-The-Sun Road was included in the National Register of Historic Places and in 1985 was made a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.⁷
