Honouliuli Internment Camp (official name in 1943 when it opened) was added to the National Park System in 2015, however the park service's involvement with the site started in 2006 with the archaeological work conducted by park service personnel and partners which eventually led to Honouliuli becoming a national park. Per the Presidential Proclamation, "The Secretary shall prepare a management plan for the monument, with full public involvement... [the plan] shall ensure that the monument fulfills the following purposes for the benefit of present and future generations: (1) to preserve and protect the objects of historic interest associated with Honouliuli Internment Camp, and (2) to study and interpret the history of World War II internment and detention in Hawai‘i... [it] shall set forth the desired relationship of the monument to other related sources, programs, and organizations associated with World War II internment, detention, and exclusion." Since its establishment as a national park, the park service continues to work with partners and communities to honor and preserve this important history that is still relevant today. Though closed to the general public because the park service does not own any lands that connect the park to public roads, there are other ways to visit and learn about Honouliuli National Historic Site. Current management is focused on vegetation clearing to preserve historic features, restoration of existing historic features, and education and outreach. Additionally, the park is starting its general management process (GMP) this year. The GMP will be a multi-year process and there will be many opportunities for the public to engage with its development.
