So, that building was gone, President Truman's 100th birthday was just days away, thousands of visitors were coming...what to do?
Well, the City of Independence valiantly stepped up to help, offering the National Park Service an historic fire house on Main Street as a temporary place to issue tickets for tours, help visitors plan, and administer the park. The City was a lifesaver!
It's been 38 years since that happened, and we still call 223 North Main Street home. But recently the City of Independence and its citizens came to our assistance again as we explored options for a new visitor services center and administrative headquarters. They donated a wonderful piece of property on Truman Road on which to build this new building, which will be fully accessible and safe for all visitors, employees and visitors. Today, July 15, 2022, the Park Service announced that the real estate transfer for this piece of property is complete.
We'll use this blog to provide updates on this project as they are known.
But we thank Independence, Missouri, for their friendship over the last 38 years, and for this incredible land donation. And we look forward to decades of future friendship.
