Well, if you're like us, 2020 may have been the longest ten years of our lives. When the park decided to close on March 17, 2020, we thought a few days or weeks would be the necessary time for the COVID19 pandemic to resolve. Then came the state and local stay-at-home orders, a sharp increase in local COVID matrixes, another spike in the fall, and even worse numbers in the winter months.
What we thought would be a few days turned into about 14 months. 14 months!
But most park staff returned to do some catch up work and planning in early June. And now, starting on June 30, we are ready to begin welcoming visitors to 219 North Delaware Street.
Now until we get some further guidance on close spaces in our historic homes, the Truman Home, the Truman Farm Home will be closed, as will the Visitor Center. But we want to mingle with our visitors again!
On Wednesdays-Sundays, some outdoor orientation talks will be offered by our talented Rangers. (The park is now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.) You can find the daily schedule here.
Also, this year we are starting to offer Ranger programs at the Truman Farm in Grandview on Fridays and Saturdays...hopefully by mid July.*
Some things that happened while facilities were closed for the last few months:
*The historic driveway at the Truman Home in Independence was repaired and restored.
*The roof of the Truman Farm Home in Grandview was completely repaired and replaced using historically correct materials. Rain gutters were also replaced.
*Many of our regular programs transitioned to online experiences.
*The park participated in over 20 education programs online.
