Plan A Field Trip

If you wish to plan a field trip to Harry S Truman NHS, you will need to know the following:

  • Reservations are required by contacting the Park's Interpretation Division at (816) 254-4112, ext 1262. Groups MUST begin at the Park's Visitor Center located at 223 North Main Street, on the Independence Square.
  • The park is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • The group should see a 12-minute film highligting Truman and his home.
  • The group will then travel to the Truman Home where they will start at their reserved times.
  • Due to Resource Protection, group size will be limited to 8 per tour (including teachers and chaperones) when touring through the home. Groups will experience some waiting time. Because of staffing and the need to balance the needs of all visitors, Harry S Truman National Historic Site can only accommodate school groups of 24 or less at this time.
  • Groups can visit the Noland Home, home to Harry's cousins, across from the Truman Home and explore self-guided exhibits. Restrooms and water fountains available. The Noland Home is accessible from the rear.
  • Groups are required to follow the Resource Protection rules that the Park Ranger provides before each tour.
  • No fee is charged for school groups.

Unfortunately, few papers from Harry S Truman's school years survive. Thankfully today's students will have their educational experiences documented more fully!
 

Requesting a Field Trip at Harry S Truman National Historic Site

Harry S Truman loved America's youth, and loved spending time with them, particularly once his presidential library opened.

If you would like to bring an educational group to Harry S Truman National Historic Site as part of a curriculum objective, please note the following:

*Groups are held to no more than 24, total, three tours of 8 persons per tour. We cannot make any exceptions to this because of space constraints in the Truman Home and staffing.
*All groups must begin their visit at the park's visitor center, where tickets will be issued, and where all can watch a brief orientation film.
*The park is open Wednesdays-Sundays, thus, we cannot take school trip reservations Mondays and Tuesdays, as Rangers are not on duty.
*There is no fee.

This reservation opportunity applies to curriculum-based field trips only...all other groups are first come first served on the day of tour.

The park is open to the public Wednesdays-Sundays. The park is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Administrative staff work Monday-Friday. For Administration staff, please call (816) 254-2720, Mondays to Fridays, 8AM-4PM. All times central. (We like to call it Truman Time.)
