219 North Delaware Street...The Summer White House. Come See It!

From 1945 to 1953, 219 North Delaware Street was the second most famous address in America. The press started calling it the "Summer White House." The Trumans were intensively private people, despite living in the public eye. Only a few were allowed to step inside the Summer White House. Now, thanks to First Lady Bess Wallace Truman, you can!

Some notes:

*Tours of the Truman Home are Ranger or Volunteer guided only, and only provided to those who have secured tickets. Tickets are free, and must be acquired at the visitor center, at 223 North Main Street. NO TICKETS ARE ISSUED AT THE TRUMAN HOME ITSELF.

*Tours are first come, first served. You can call (816)254-9929 to check status of tickets, but we cannot hold tickets.

*The tours are limited to 8 persons. This is for the preservation of the Home and its contents.

*At the beginning of the tour, visitors are provided a list of rules...all of which are intended to ensure the preservation of the Home and contents, and the safety of all.

*The tours are 30 minutes in length. There is no seating inside of the Truman Home, and there are no public restrooms in the Home.

*There is one step at the Secret Service gate, five steps leading to the back porch, and three steps exiting the building. Please advise park staff at the visitor center while ticketing if assistance is needed for the steps.

*In accordance with the wishes of the late Margaret Truman Daniel (daughter of Harry and Bess Truman, and for the preservation of the Home, tours are of the first floor only.

The Truman Farm takes visitors around the grounds of the family farm in Grandview and discusses the 11 years Truman spent there as a young man.

Around the Corner from the Truman Home gives visitors the chance to see several structures important to Truman throughout his private life and starts at the Truman home in Independence.

The Political Education of Harry Truman starts at the Truman statue on the Independence town square and takes visitors past several buildings that were significant in Truman's early political years.

The park is open to the public Wednesdays-Sundays. The park is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Administrative staff work Monday-Friday. For Administration staff, please call (816) 254-2720, Mondays to Fridays, 8AM-4PM. All times central. (We like to call it Truman Time.)
