Saint Croix Island International Historic Site

Saint Croix Island International Historic Site commemorates one of the earliest European settlements in North America and the first attempt at permanent French colonization in the territory they called l'Acadie (Acadia). Plan to drive approximately 119 miles (191.51 km) to visit the historic site. This will take approximately 3 hours to 3 hours and 30 minutes from Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Saint Croix Island International Historic Site is located 8 miles (13 km) south of Calais, Maine, on U.S. Route 1.

Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park is approximately 127 miles (204.39 km) from Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Acadia National Park is located along the coast of Maine and protects more than 47,000 acres (19,000 hectares) of mountains, woodlands, lakes, and ocean shoreline. Hiking, biking, tide-pooling, and ranger-led programs are popular activities. Plan to drive anywhere between 2 hours and 40 minutes to roughly 3 hours and 30 minutes to from Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.

Roosevelt Campobello International Park

Roosevelt Campobello International Park

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s magnificent summer home is preserved here in a combination indoor museum and outdoor nature park on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada. Roosevelt Campobello International Park is a singular example of international cooperation - jointly administered, staffed, and funded by the peoples of Canada and the United States. Plan at least approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to travel to the site from Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. The site is located approximately 150 miles (241.40 km) away from the monument.

 

National Wildlife Refuges

Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge is composed of islands along the Maine coast. This wildlife refuge protects nesting habitat for diverse seabirds and wading bird populations, as well as bald eagles. Visit Maine Coastal Islands' website for more information.

Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is the eastern-most national wildlife refuge in the Atlantic flyway. This wildlife refuge protects migrating waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, upland game birds, songbirds, and birds of prey. Visit Moosehorn's website for more information

 

State Parks

Baxter State Park is the closest state park to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Katahdin, the tallest mountain in Maine, and the northern end of the Appalachian Trail are located in Baxter State Park.
