This document serves as an introduction to the ways in which chemicals used in wildland fire suppression can affect heritage properties. Much of the information provided here comes from the NCPTT study on fire chemicals and cultural resources. Included in this study were three building materials and four fire chemicals.

Located at Market Plaza, the South Rim's business center, the main lodge has a cafeteria style restaurant, coffee shop/cafe, gift shop and an outdoor patio tavern with a food menu. Pet friendly rooms are available. it's a short walk across the parking lot to Canyon Village Market (General Store and Deli), and the U.S. Post Office. From the lodge, it averages around a one mile (1.6 km) walk, along paved footpaths, to the edge of Grand Canyon.

The Backcountry Info Center is open daily from 8 am–noon; and 1 pm–5 pm, and provides information, permits, and trip planning assistance about day and overnight hikes into the canyon. The building is located in the village by Parking Lot D, and across the railroad tracks from Maswik Lodge. Park in Lot D, then take the free, early morning Hikers' Express bus from Backcountry Info Center to South Kaibab Trailhead.

Jim Beckwourth, the African-American mountain man, scion of British nobility, great medicine and warrior chief in the Crow Indian Nation, US Army scout and courier, and discoverer of Beckwourth Pass and trail, settled here on his road for 7 years. He created several things we still have: Beckwourth Pass and Trail, located by Trails West markers, this cabin, and a national best seller biography, The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth, 1856.

This is the trailhead for Acadia Mountain, a 681 ft mountain located on the west side of Mount Desert Island. The trailhead is on Maine Route 102, about 3 miles south of Somesville and just after Ikes Point Boat Launch.

If you enjoy historic architecture, a good meal or place to relax than the Paradise Inn is the place for you! Built in 1917, the Paradise Inn is open generally from May through September and features a large dining room and gift shop.

The most successful water-powered gristmill along Rock Creek, Peirce Mill ran commercially from the 1820s until 1897. Restored in the 1930s, 1970s, and the first decade of the 21st century, the mill today serves as an educational site connecting visitors to Rock Creek Park's rich heritage.

At Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area, long-term vegetation monitoring provides park managers with useful information for decision making on topics including changes in climate, grazing, and fire management. A recent report summarizes monitoring from 2011 to 2022 of vegetation and soil conditions provides management recommendations for their conservation.

The Mead Cultural Education Center, located in Yankton, South Dakota, was constructed in 1909 by Dr. Leonard C. Mead. Originally serving as part of the women’s ward for the Dakota Hospital for the Insane, the building was in use until the 1980s. Today, however, it houses the Dakota Territorial Museum and is upkept by the Yankton County Historical Society.

During the Japanese occupation of Guam, CHamoru were forced to build defenses on the beach, including the pillboxes and bunkers that can still be seen today, in preparation for the American invasion. That invasion came on July 21, 1944, W Day for Guam. While a simultaneous attack took place five miles south at Hågat, the Third Marine Division landed on the 2,500-yard Assan Beach, marking the start of the Battle of Guam.

The A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal) Church formed in Nicodemus in 1879 and met in different buildings until they obtained this building from the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in 1910, which had built it in 1885. The A.M.E. Church worshipped here until around the 1950s when it closed due to a declining congregation. The restored building is open to the public during site business hours.

Built from 1937-1939 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project with local limestone, the Nicodemus Township Hall has served as a central meeting place for the community for decades. Representing the pillar of self-determination in African American communities, this building hosted everything from voting and township meetings to dances and roller-skating. It currently houses the site's visitor center.

The Philip A. Hart Visitor Center houses brochures, books, park passes, and all the sound advice you'll need to plan your visit. The visitor center has displays of Sleeping Bear Dune's natural history, fauna and flora, geology, history, and stories about people of the park.
