The NPS Inventory and Monitoring Division partnered with New River Gorge National Park and Preserve to study how bats use cliff habitats that overlap with climbing routes, aiming to understand whether recreation might unintentionally disturb sensitive wildlife.

At Lava Beds National Monument, a species inventory helps park managers understand the rich diversity of lichens in the park, allowing them to craft management strategies to preserve lichens. Located in a semi-arid zone of northern California, cave lichens represent a unique floral component for the region and include many rare or little-known species.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield park staff aimed to find out if Appalachian cottontail inhabited the park, so they collaborated with the Inventory and Monitoring Division to survey for their scat.

Little Rock Central High School, a functioning 9th - 12th grade facility, is a combined Collegiate Gothic and Art Deco style building that covers much of two city blocks and contains over 150,000 square feet. The school is closed to the public.

During the Japanese occupation of Guam, CHamoru were forced to build defenses on the beach, including the pillboxes and bunkers that can still be seen today, in preparation for the American invasion. That invasion came on July 21, 1944, W Day for Guam. While a simultaneous attack took place five miles south at Hågat, the Third Marine Division landed on the 2,500-yard Assan Beach, marking the start of the Battle of Guam.

In the fall of 1861 after the Battle of Port Royal, the US military came ashore around Beaufort and found thousands of now formerly enslaved people in control of the region. The military had no real plan yet for what to do with these people or even their legal status. Newly freed Black South Carolinians were active participants. They demanded access to programs to support labor reforms, land redistribution, quality education, and military service.

Originally known as the Sleeping Bear House, this inn with bright geraniums filling its window boxes welcomed the guests of the little village for nearly one hundred years. D.H. Day himself married the daughter of the innkeeper and lived in the second story for a while. In addition to Day and his family, the inn hosted an eclectic mix of lumberjacks, dock workers, businessmen and posh passengers.

A replica of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's longboat rowed between flagships in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Mid-May through mid-October the longboat is located next to the visitor center just off the parking lot.
