Sculptured Beach

Sculptured Beach is located two miles south of Limantour Beach, which is the closest place to park. Winter rains feed two creeks which stream across the sand into the ocean creating a wet barrier for beach walkers wishing to keep their feet dry. Once at Sculptured Beach, look for its namesake rocks lying on the shoreline. The sculpted rocks are exposed at low tide, along with the organisms that cling to them, creating an exciting area to go tidepooling.

Tecumseh began life in the Shawnee village of Piqua, Ohio on March 9, 1768 as a great meteor flashed and burned its way across the heavens. This event accounts for his name: The Shooting Star, or Celestial Panther Lying in Wait. Tecumseh grew to be a famous warrior and dynamic orator. These skills, paired with his belief that the white man would never rest until all American Indians were dispossessed, made him a powerful and influential force.

One of the snappiest visitors to Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site is the snapping turtle! They can be spotting lying on the bottom of the muddy river, sometimes best at low tide. When they aren’t in the mud of the tidal river, during summer months they can be spotted up in the grass looking for good places to lay their eggs. Snapping turtles have extremely powerful jaws, sharp claws, a serrated beak, and a fierce snap that can reach farther than you may expect.

In 1849, many companies of gold seekers decided to follow the Applegate Trail to a new cutoff, said to be a quicker way to the goldfields. Lassen’s Cutoff turned out to be 200 miles longer than the established routes, extending the trip by weeks. Long before reaching the mines, most companies ran out of food. Starving men desperately filled their empty bellies with anything they could chew- rotting livestock lying trailside, boiled bits of leather, and plants, some poisonous.
