How Much is Too Much: Ungulate Use of Wetlands in Great Sand Dunes National Park, 2016-2019

In recent years, something new and concerning caught the attention of staff at Great Sand Dunes National Park. Elk were using the sandsheet wetlands more and more. Monitoring from 2016 to 2019 by the NPS Rocky Mountain Inventory and Monitoring Network and park staff revealed that heavy use by ungulates (hoofed mammals) was degrading many wetland sites. This article summarizes a report of baseline ungulate use and wetland conditions in the park and potential management tools.

North Kaibab Trail is the least visited and most difficult of the major inner canyon corridor trails. It is challenging for day hikers as well as rim-to-rim hikers. Water at the North Kaibab TRAILHEAD water has been shut off for the winter and is expected to be turned back on May 15, when the roads open. Always carry a way to filter or treat creek water, in the event the water stations at Manzanita and Cottonwood Campground are not working.

A.M.E. Church

The A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal) Church formed in Nicodemus in 1879 and met in different buildings until they obtained this building from the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in 1910, which had built it in 1885. The A.M.E. Church worshipped here until around the 1950s when it closed due to a declining congregation. The restored building is open to the public during site business hours.

VIEW FROM THE WAYSIDE: This wayside is in a small offshoot off the main boardwalk. The offshoot is surrounded by 3 to 4 foot tall scrubby bushes. Directly overlooking the wayside, the flat, scrubby grassland can be seen in the distance. Behind where you are standing are two benches, both facing the flat grassland. Turning to face the benches, the vast expanse of the rolling hillside can be seen in the distance.
