Fort Des Moines is a military installation in Des Moines, Iowa. During World War I, the fort served as the first and only training site for African American officers. During World War II, Fort Des Moines was the first training site for the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), and the only training site for WAC and WAAC officers.

Open daily: 8 am - 7 pm. Yavapai Geology Museum offers one of the best vantage points for an overview of Grand Canyon geology. The building is right on the very edge of the canyon rim at Yavapai Point, The Museum Features: a bookstore and museum shop, large picture windows for viewing the canyon, and a variety of exhibits about the geology of Grand Canyon. Restrooms are in a separate building adjacent to the parking lot. The shuttle bus stop is also on the parking lot.

Gifford was a young man when he joined the Continental Army. He witnessed and participated in the events surrounding the Siege of 1777. He later fought in the War of 1812.

Cuff Whittemore was present at Battle Road in Capt. Benjamin Locke's militia. He later enlisted in Arlington, Massachusetts in Capt. Benjamin Locke’s company, in Col. Thomas Gardner’s regiment, and was present at the Battle of Bunker Hill in the redoubt.

From July 1775 through April 1776, General George Washington used the abandoned Vassall House in Cambridge as his military headquarters during the Siege of Boston. In order to organize, administer, and command the army, Washington relied on his council of war, comprised of the senior-ranking general officers, and his "military family," comprised of the staff of secretaries and aides de camp at headquarters.

A lawyer and influential secretary to George Washington, Robert Harrison helped manage the paperwork and communication for Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Despite personal struggles, he left Virginia in the beginning of the war to serve as an aide-de-camp at Washington’s headquarters in Cambridge. Harrison became a trusted and dependable secretary to Washington during the war and went on to become the chief judge of Maryland.

Edificio Comunidad de Orgullo Gay de Puerto Rico, commonly known as “Casa Orgulllo,” served as the meeting hall for the first official gay/lesbian organization established in Puerto Rico. Founded in 1974, Comunidad de Orgullo Gay was the first organized attempt to confront social, political and legal discrimination against the local LGBTQ community.

The Daisy and L.C. Bates Home is nationally significant for its role as the de facto command post during the Central High School desegregation crisis in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Seth Rowley enlisted in the Continental Army at just age 16. He witnessed the Siege of 1777, the execution of British spy Major John Andre, and one of the last campaigns of the war in 1783.

Alexander Lemmon was an Irish immigrant who joined the Continental Army in 1775, fought in the attack of Quebec and survived the Siege of 1777. Although not many details of his life are known, the personal descriptions in his story go to show the humanity of all the forgotten soldiers of the American Revolution.

Leonard Bleeker was commissioned an officer in the Continental Army in 1775. He served through the entirety of the American Revolution. As the new nation began, he worked in finance, laying the groundwork for the modern stock exchange.

John Laurens, born to a wealthy planter family in South Carolina, received a republican education in Switzerland and England. Upon his return to South Carolina to fight in the American Revolution, he radically proposed to recruit slaves as soldiers in return for their freedom. An aide-de-camp to General Washington and later a lieutenant colonel of the Continental Army with a field command, he served bravely in many key battles, only to die in a meaningless skirmish in 1782.

Zopher Hawkins was only 19 years old when he joined the Continental Army. In 1780, he became a captive and prisoner of war. He lived until age 91.

Silas Royal enlisted in Dracut, Massachusetts in the company of Capt. Jonas Richardson, in Col. James Frye’s regiment, and was present at the Battle of Bunker Hill in the redoubt.

Two-year summary of findings from amphibian monitoring in two sites at the Barataria Preserve, a NPS property near New Orleans, Louisiana. Treefrogs and other amphibians are monitored at two sites along the Bayou des Familles using PVC pipes and plywood coverboards. Community composition and changes in the relative abundance of common species are tracked over time as indicators of park ecological health.
