Forests in Cuyahoga Valley National Park are responding positively to nearly a decade of white-tailed deer management. Although native, at high densities white-tailed deer can negatively impact forest vegetation. A recent study using data from the park’s long-term monitoring program found a reduction of woody browse, forest regeneration, and decreases in browse on the indicator species trillium.

Box Canyon is an impressive slot canyon along Stevens Canyon Road carved by the Muddy Fork of the Cowlitz River. A popular stop when touring the park by vehicle, Box Canyon includes a comfort station and picnic area.

This large, one-and-a-half-story, shingle-style house was constructed in 1895 or 1896 for Mrs. William Shepard and her daughter Katherine, who was popularly known on the island as "Miss Katie." The house was allegedly designed in the style of the Shepards' residence in New Orleans. A detached kitchen and dining room was located behind the house. After the Cottage Row dining room closed around 1900, Katie Shepard converted her cottage into a summer hotel.

The Mead Cultural Education Center, located in Yankton, South Dakota, was constructed in 1909 by Dr. Leonard C. Mead. Originally serving as part of the women’s ward for the Dakota Hospital for the Insane, the building was in use until the 1980s. Today, however, it houses the Dakota Territorial Museum and is upkept by the Yankton County Historical Society.

The National Park Service (NPS) is on a mission to deepen its understanding of the bees living in parks. Traditional survey methods require significant time, specialized expertise, and the collection of specimens from their natural habitats for species-level identification. With limited bee specialists available and a growing need for efficient, cost-effective methods, the NPS sought an alternative approach.

The pueblo site and self-guiding trail are open Thursday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm. Located 3 miles (4.8km) west of Desert View Watchtower, the site is a small Ancestral Puebloan village showing the outlines of rooms and a round kiva. Visitors can walk a relatively flat 0.1 mile (200 m) self-guiding trail around the site. Visit the Native American Artisan Market with authentic and beautiful arts and crafts for sale. The adjacent museum is CLOSED until further notice.

The St. Francis Hotel has lived many lives: first as a place of business operated by early settlers Zachary and Jenny Fletcher, then as private residence and restaurant of the Switzer family. The original two-story limestone structure was built in 1881 and was a successful hotel in Nicodemus. The Switzer family bought the building in 1921 and built several additions while they lived there.

The Visitor Center/Park Store is open Thursday - Sunday (4 days per week) from 10am to 4pm, inside the Sandburg Home. The online park store is open everyday! The Park Store and visitor information area is a great place to start your visit! You can find information to plan your visit, get a passport stamp, participate in the Jr Ranger or BARK Ranger programs, and get a schedule of upcoming events. The park store has a wide range of Sandburg books, media, and other items.
