2025 Update! Horses at Assateague Island National Seashore are managed as a wildlife population. Regular monitoring of population dynamics is necessary to support the long-term fertility control program that was initiated in 1994 to reduce the numbers of the Maryland herd, and now, management of the population close to the goal range of 80-100 individuals.

The Flying Mountain Trailhead is located north of Southwest Harbor, ME off State Route 102 via Fernald Point Road. It directly serves Flying Mountain and Valley Cove Trails with connections to Valley Peak Trail and Saint Sauveur Mountain Trail.

This large, one-and-a-half-story, shingle-style house was constructed in 1895 or 1896 for Mrs. William Shepard and her daughter Katherine, who was popularly known on the island as "Miss Katie." The house was allegedly designed in the style of the Shepards' residence in New Orleans. A detached kitchen and dining room was located behind the house. After the Cottage Row dining room closed around 1900, Katie Shepard converted her cottage into a summer hotel.

The most successful water-powered gristmill along Rock Creek, Peirce Mill ran commercially from the 1820s until 1897. Restored in the 1930s, 1970s, and the first decade of the 21st century, the mill today serves as an educational site connecting visitors to Rock Creek Park's rich heritage.

As pioneers headed west on the Mormon Trail, some settled near the crossing of the West Nishnabotna River. They established Old Macedonia in 1846 to serve the needs of pioneers traveling west. The Pioneer Trail Museum features a replica handcart, oxen yoke, pictures, and other items related to the pioneers and Mormon Trail.

Cape Cod is a large glacial moraine peninsula that extends 96.5 km into the Atlantic Ocean from the coast of Massachusetts. Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO) is located on the outer portion of Cape Cod. Almost all the estuarine habitat at CACO is associated with two large coastal lagoon systems, Pleasant Bay (PB) and Nauset Harbor/Marsh (NH). During the Japanese occupation of Guam, CHamoru were forced to build defenses on the beach, including the pillboxes and bunkers that can still be seen today, in preparation for the American invasion. That invasion came on July 21, 1944, W Day for Guam. While a simultaneous attack took place five miles south at Hågat, the Third Marine Division landed on the 2,500-yard Assan Beach, marking the start of the Battle of Guam.

The Corps reached the Pacific Ocean over a year and a half after departing from Camp Wood, and settled in for the 1805-06 winter. They built Fort Clatsop, a reconstruction of which is found at its original site, located in Astoria, Oregon. The Corp's presence in this area strengthened the United States's claim to the Northwest. It also paved the way for the first American settlement--the Pacific Fur Company Post, established in 1811 by John Jacob Astor.

The Highland River Access is a public river access for the Delaware River located in Minisink Ford, in between Lackawaxen, PA and Barryville, NY. It is owned by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. This is a canoe/kayak access only.

The Philip A. Hart Visitor Center houses brochures, books, park passes, and all the sound advice you'll need to plan your visit. The visitor center has displays of Sleeping Bear Dune's natural history, fauna and flora, geology, history, and stories about people of the park.

VIEW FROM THE WAYSIDE: This wayside is in a small offshoot off the main boardwalk. The offshoot is surrounded by 3 to 4 foot tall scrubby bushes. Directly overlooking the wayside, the flat, scrubby grassland can be seen in the distance. Behind where you are standing are two benches, both facing the flat grassland. Turning to face the benches, the vast expanse of the rolling hillside can be seen in the distance.
