You can be a Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network Junior Scientist! Explore what it is like to be a scientist that monitors plants, animals, and their habitats national parks. You will explore the 15 parks of the Heartland Network, make observations, identify animals and plants, and learn why scientists use scientific names for organisms. Located in the remote northwest corner of the park, Carbon River is home to temperate rainforest, Mount Rainier's lowest elevation glacier, and a dynamic river system. Hiking, bicycling, and camping opportunities abound.

In November 1920, D.H. Day donated 32 acres of land on Glen Arbor Bay to the state for use as a state park. Day built a one room large log cabin 1923-24 on the park campgrounds as a space for events. It has a front and back porch. Today it is used for educational programs and other special events.

For nearly sixty years, Martin and Caroline Brinegar lived on this 125-acre farm leading lives based on hard work, self-sufficiency, and an abiding religious faith. Descendants of their three children often come here to visit the homeplace.

An affluent landowner, William Jenkins provided shelter to freedom seekers heading north on the Underground Railroad on his estate north of Boston in Andover, Massachusetts.

Bright Angel Trail lets hikers walk in the footsteps of the canyon's Indigenous Peoples, miners, and early tourists, as they descend into the canyon's depths. Offering big views, morning and afternoon shade, resthouses, vault toilets, and water stations during the summer. As of April 13, 2025, the water is ON at 1.5- and 3-mile resthouses and Havasupai Gardens. Portions of Bright Angel Trail are closed for waterline construction, Visit the link for a list of trail closures.

The overlook at Uēkahuna offers great views into Halemaʻumaʻu crater and surrounding areas from the summit of Kīlauea volcano. Located at the end of Crater Rim Drive West, a 2.8 mile (7 minute) drive from the entrance station. Family-friendly location with ranger's on-site for information. More available parking compared to other locations.

Experience the heat from nearby steam vents as you take in the breathtaking views of the eruption, with unobstructed, panoramic views of the entire cinder cone. Located on Crater Rim Drive West, 1 mile (4 minutes) from entrance station. A popular, but congested spot due to being the first overlook you encounter upon entering the park.

Jim Beckwourth, the African-American mountain man, scion of British nobility, great medicine and warrior chief in the Crow Indian Nation, US Army scout and courier, and discoverer of Beckwourth Pass and trail, settled here on his road for 7 years. He created several things we still have: Beckwourth Pass and Trail, located by Trails West markers, this cabin, and a national best seller biography, The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth, 1856.

2025 Update! Horses at Assateague Island National Seashore are managed as a wildlife population. Regular monitoring of population dynamics is necessary to support the long-term fertility control program that was initiated in 1994 to reduce the numbers of the Maryland herd, and now, management of the population close to the goal range of 80-100 individuals.

The Flying Mountain Trailhead is located north of Southwest Harbor, ME off State Route 102 via Fernald Point Road. It directly serves Flying Mountain and Valley Cove Trails with connections to Valley Peak Trail and Saint Sauveur Mountain Trail.

Box Canyon is an impressive slot canyon along Stevens Canyon Road carved by the Muddy Fork of the Cowlitz River. A popular stop when touring the park by vehicle, Box Canyon includes a comfort station and picnic area.

This large, one-and-a-half-story, shingle-style house was constructed in 1895 or 1896 for Mrs. William Shepard and her daughter Katherine, who was popularly known on the island as "Miss Katie." The house was allegedly designed in the style of the Shepards' residence in New Orleans. A detached kitchen and dining room was located behind the house. After the Cottage Row dining room closed around 1900, Katie Shepard converted her cottage into a summer hotel.

In May 1945, General Dwight D. Eisenhower accepted the surrender of Germany, ending World War II in Europe. Eisenhower chose to remember Victory in Europe by actively commemorating the sacrifices and cooperation that made it possible. For Eisenhower and the Allies, the road to victory was not easy. Eisenhower believed that Victory in Europe Day--VE Day--could and should serve as a reminder of the cost of war for future generations. Explore this story further in this article.
