Weather

A tall, green pine tree located at the top of a sandstone cliff and storm clouds loom above.
Weather changes abruptly and is often very different around the park. Dark clouds may bring lightning and a down pour or slip past without a drop of rain.

Current Observations

There are two Remote Automatic Weather Stations (RAWS) in the park. One is located in the Morefield area and the the second is near the Mesa Verde Museum (Chapin). These stations are part of National Interagency Fire Center. They report data collected in the last 72 hours for temperature, dew point temperature, and relative humidity. Recorded precipitation is rain and melted snow combined.

Snow Data

Colorado State University maintains a data station where you can search for daily, monthly, and yearly statistics. This includes the maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation, and snowfall since 1922 on Chapin Mesa.

To find daily snow data, click Colorado Climate Center and select Mesa Verde from the map or the drop-down menu.

Weather Conditions Throughout the Year

Since most visitors spend a great deal of time outdoors during a visit to Mesa Verde National Park, you'll want to be prepared for the weather. Use the chart and links below for weather information before your trip. It's always a good idea to check daily forecasts before visiting the park.

During the winter, the weather is usually mild, however, snowstorms can occur as late as May and as early as October. June through September are warm to hot, with cool evenings. Daytime summer temperatures can reach into the 90s, so be sure to drink plenty of water. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August and pose a hazard. In case of lightning, the safest place to be is inside your car.
