In 2020, The Great American Outdoors Act established the National Parks and Public Lands Legacy Restoration Fund to address deferred maintenance across the Department of Interior’s portfolio. The Legacy Restoration Fund will provide up to $6.5 billion total to National Parks across the country to address extensive deferred maintenance. The National Park Service received funding to rehabilitate urban recreation areas throughout National Capital Parks – East. The following areas will be rehabilitated:
Rehabilitation includes repairing deferred maintenance issues and improving structures. Key items that will be replaced or rehabilitated within the twelve urban recreation areas include tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, restroom facilities, and fencing and lighting.
