Nicodemus Oral History

Nicodemus is fortunate to have such a rich archive of historical resources. From its early days, residents knew the importance of their community and the need to record their experiences and stories. In April 1887, ten years after the first settlers arrived, the first known written history occurred when local newspaper The Western Cyclone published an early history of Nicodemus’ settlement. Additionally, the writings of Lulu Craig, known as the first historian of Nicodemus, provide personal insights into the town's history. The preservation of Nicodemus' legacy through academic papers and oral histories further enriches the understanding of this historically significant African American community.

We invite you to listen to the below oral histories from Nicodemus descendants and learn about their connections to the community. Some of the interviews have been cut from their original length for time restraints. Transcripts of each interview are also provided.

If you would like access to other interviews or the full length versions of the oral histories provided, please contact us for more information.
