Monument Description
This monment, donated by the Valley Forge Park Commission under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1908, marks the location of the first Brigade of the Pennsylvania Line. Anthony Wayne commanded the first and second brigades which constituted a division, an unusual responsibility for a brigadier general. Pennsylvania's senior officer, Arthur D. St. Clair, had been removed from this command at this time, and was awaiting court martial throughout the winter of 1777-1778. The accuracy of the inscription on this monument is under question; there is some doubt that Colonel Thomas Hartley was in command of the 1st Brigade of the Pennsylvania Line.
