Park Visitation Decrease in 2020

Kawaihae, Hawai´i – In 2020, Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site welcomed 23,970 visitors to the park, an 82% decrease in visitation from 2019 when the park hosted 133,573 visitors. The decrease was due largely to temporary park closures and the cancellation of education events and programs in response to the coronavirus pandemic.The coronavirus pandemic has affected nearly every National Park Service operation and parks continue to work with public health officials to navigate changing conditions. A maximum 66 of the 423 parks in the National Park System were fully closed for two months or more. At Puʻukoholā Heiau, the covered open-air lānai (10 visitors max at one time) and visitor center museum/sales outlet (four visitors max at one time) are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., along with the parkʻs half-mile loop trail. To protect the health of those who live, work, and visit America’s National Parks, face masks are required in all National Park Service building and facilities. Masks are also required on federally managed lands when physical distance cannot be maintained, including narrow or busy trails, overlooks and parking lots.The park welcomes the local community and visitors to enjoy and learn the history of Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site.
