Rachel Crane Mather Diary

The Storm Swept Coast of South Carolina was written by Rachel Crane Mather, the founder of Mather’s School. This book describes the damages done by the Hurricane of 1893 in the Sea Islands, shares accounts from survivors and the recovery efforts made by Rachel Mather and others.

Laura Towne Diary

Laura M. Towne, one of the founders of Penn School, kept a diary of her time living and teaching in Beaufort. The diary entries span from 1862 to 1884.

Susie King Taylor Diary

Susie King Taylor escaped enslavement and became a nurse for the First South Carolina Volunteers. This memoir provided her thoughts and memories of serving alongside this Black regiment.

Elizabeth Hyde Botume Diary

Elizabeth Hyde Botume was one of the earliest teachers taking part in what was called “The Port Royal Experience” and this is her account of the early days as a teacher in Port Royal at Smith Plantation, part of which was Camp Saxton.
