This 9 minute film tells the story of the 1864 capture of Fort Harrison by Union forces, including elements of the United States Colored Troops (USCTs), as well as detailing the efforts to preserve the site - the first unit of Richmond National Battlefield Park.
The Battles for Richmond
Union and Confederate armies fought near richmond twice, in 1862 and again in 1864. More than a dozen battlefields and historic sites are preserved by Richmond National Battlefield Park. Brief animated summaries of the major battles that occured near Richmond are below.
The Seven Days' Battles were a series of battles near Richmond from June 25 to July 1, 1862. Robert E. Lee, newly in command of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, faced George McClellan, commanding the Union Army of the Potomac.
Union troops, including elements of the United States Colored Troops, capture New Market Heights and Fort Harrison, part of the Confederate defenses of Richmond.
