Chess, anyone?

While you're here, rest with a friend for a while and enjoy a nice game of chess on our public table. If you wish to borrow some chess pieces during our visitor center hours, stop by and ask a ranger.

Chess was a popular game in Roger Williams's lifetime. He would have been familiar with the game and perhaps an avid player.

Claiborne Pell, senator from Rhode Island from 1960-1997 introduced the legislation that established this National Memorial. He was an advocate for having chess tables available. He said that Roger Williams had a remarkable influence on the principles of freedom in America.
