The Cheeseboro Trailhead Improvement Project is a revitalization project that is currently under construction in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA). The project will regrade the entrance road and parking areas to mitigate existing drainage issues and eliminate flooding hazards posed to local residents.

The project replaces an existing asphalt and dirt parking lot that were “grandfathered” into service when the property was acquired for parkland in 1980. The improvements will result in a more sustainable facility that meets public use and accessibility standards.

The project will include site grading; the installation of potable water and storm drainage utilities; new gravel-paved roadways and lots; accessible parking; a pedestrian pathway; and a new vault toilet.

The National Park Service awarded the construction contract to AMA Diversified and work began on Sept. 19, 2022.

Latest news on the Cheeseboro Trailhead rehabilitation project

The project will be completed in mid-July 2023. Park staff are currently putting on the finishing touches to complete the project. Construction fencing will remain throughout the closure, and the temporary lot south of the bridge will remain open for public use.

New amenities at the Cheeseboro trailhead will include:

· New parking lots – both upper and lower - with horse trailer parking and accessible parking spots

· Improved stormwater management throughout the site

· New potable water line and fixtures in both upper and lower lots for park users

· New vault toilets in the upper lot

· New equestrian trail connecting the upper and lower lot

· New pole craft fencing throughout the site, including along Cheeseboro Road

· New entrance sign

· New gate between the upper and lower lots

· Binder on the gravel road to reduce dust

· A new 20’ x 44’ shade structure in the upper lot

Recreational access

The entire area around the existing parking lot (see map at the bottom of the webpage) will be closed during construction. Hikers, cyclists, and equestrians can still access the greater Cheeseboro and Palo Comado trail system via the Lower Cheeseboro Canyon Trail leaving from a temporary parking lot just south of the construction area. The temporary lot has portable toilets and picnic benches for visitor use. Several short trail sections (totaling approximately one mile) will be closed during construction.

Construction site work days

Construction will occur four days a week—Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No regular work will be performed on Fridays, weekends, and federal holidays unless there’s a weather delay or unforeseen situation. During fire season, park officials will monitor fire weather forecasts and take necessary precautions during red flag days.
