![]() Alex Arnold, NPS Staff New Mexico, which ranks as the fifth-largest state in the country, features a wide range of ecosystems, from arid deserts to lush pine-juniper forests, grasslands, alpine woods, marshes, and river areas. The state is also home to numerous national parks and wildlife refuges, such as the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge, Carson National Forest, and Gila Wilderness. While grizzly bears and wolverines have been wiped out in the area, efforts have been made to reintroduce species like Mexican wolves, plains bison, and North American river otters. Additionally, ungulates such as the Siberian ibex, Himalayan tahr, and wild goat have been brought into the state.
