The American Southwest is a unique region that boasts around 643 different mammal species, making it the most diverse area in the United States. Unfortunately, some animals like shrews, pocket gophers, and pikas are at risk of disappearing locally because of limited habitats. Additionally, certain species, including jaguars and black bears, travel across seasons or even state borders, which can threaten their survival.

New Mexico, which ranks as the fifth-largest state in the country, features a wide range of ecosystems, from arid deserts to lush pine-juniper forests, grasslands, alpine woods, marshes, and river areas. The state is also home to numerous national parks and wildlife refuges, such as the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge, Carson National Forest, and Gila Wilderness.

While grizzly bears and wolverines have been wiped out in the area, efforts have been made to reintroduce species like Mexican wolves, plains bison, and North American river otters. Additionally, ungulates such as the Siberian ibex, Himalayan tahr, and wild goat have been brought into the state. To manage wildlife effectively, it’s essential for different groups to work together and cooperate.
