![]() National Archives and Records Administration On August 18, 1920 Tennessee became the 36th and final state needed to ratifty the 19th Amendment. The 19th Amendment states, "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex." The amendment went into effect on August 26, 1920. The 19th Amendment was a significant step for women’s civil rights in our country, but there were still many women, including women of color, who were denied access to the ballot until 1965 when the Voting Rights Act passed. ![]() Stones River National Battlefield is participating in this opportunity for Girl Scouts.
