Parkways

Parkways are beautifully designed roads and often include pull offs where visitors can enjoy scenic views. During the 1930s, many parkways were designed as part of the national park system as job creation projects. The Natchez Trace Parkway, completed in 2006 after 67 years of construction in Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi, is now considered one of the most scenic and beautifully designed parkways in America, and is designated as an "All American Road" scenic byway.

Of the six Congressionally-authorized Parkways, the Foothills Parkway in Tennessee is the only remaining parkway yet to be completed. To date, two discontinuous segments totaling 22.5 miles are completed and open. At the end of 2018 another 16-mile section of the parkway will be completed and open to the public.
